Meredith Kercher's family lawyer has issued a statement criticizing a new true crime miniseries about the student's tragic death in 2007.
For those not familiar with the distressing story, Meredith was a British student on an exchange program from the University of Leeds in Perugia, Italy.
She was tragically murdered at the age of 21, found dead on the floor of the room she shared with American student Amanda Knox, who was 20 at the time, along with two other Italian women.
Initially, Knox, her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, and Italian native Rudy Guede were convicted of her murder.

However, after Knox spent nearly four years in prison for a crime she maintained she did not commit, both she and Sollecito had their convictions overturned and were released in 2011.
They were convicted again during a retrial in 2014, only to be acquitted by Italy's Supreme Court in 2015.
Meanwhile, Guede served 13 years of his 16-year sentence for the murder and was released in 2021.

Now, 38-year-old Knox has executive-produced a new TV series based on her memoir, titled The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.
The biographical drama, featuring Grace Van Patten as Knox, premiered its first two episodes on August 20 on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK.
However, the Kercher family's lawyer has since released a statement criticizing the new show for dramatizing the tragedy, according to per The Mirror.
Attorney Francesco Maresca told the publication: "The key issue is that Amanda Knox evidently wants this case to remain in the spotlight. It would be respectful and dignified to have a program or TV show that reconstructs the events, honoring the life and smile of the unfortunate Meredith."

He continued: "Instead, once again, we witness an effort to alter perceptions, where the trailer claims, ‘Amanda fights tirelessly to prove her innocence and regain her freedom’. Once more, the focus is squarely on Knox.”
This isn't the first time Knox has faced criticism for this decision, as Meredith's sister has also previously expressed her views.
When filming commenced for the show in November of last year, Stephanie Kercher told The Guardian: “Meredith will always be remembered for her fight for life, and even in her absence, her love and personality continue to shine. We will forever feel this indescribable void, but we live by Meredith’s standards with dignity.”

She added: "Our family has been through so much, and it is hard to comprehend how this serves any purpose."
Knox has been outspoken about her struggles following her wrongful conviction and has authored two memoirs - Waiting to Be Heard: A Memoir in 2013, and Free: My Search For Meaning released in March of this year.
In 2016, a Netflix documentary titled Amanda Knox was released, featuring interviews with Knox discussing her story.
Tyla has reached out to Disney+ and a representative for Amanda Knox for comment.
